Holiday Temptation

Here comes Valentine's Day and more temptation to eat too much and all the wrong things. Why do people keep tempting me with unhealthy food? Valentine's Day should be about your heart and keeping it healthy instead of eating all the wrong things such as steak, baked potatoes with butter and sour cream, desserts and candy. Ask your better half to support your desire to eat healthy and take you for a walk or ice skating. Treat him or her to a massage would be great. That's the best way to say "I Love You."

Lost Blackberry

Have you ever lost your phone. It is very frustrating. Well, I lost mine yesterday. I'm thinking where did I put that thing? Did I lay it down in the refrigerator, throw it in the trash? I looked everywhere. Retraced my steps. You see, I was out of town in a motel. the only place I'd been was in the lobby area to eat breakfast and the exercise room.

Asked at the front desk. No phone. They called the number and it went straight to voice mail. Whoever had it had turned it off or it had gone dead. But I thought it was fully charged so I really thought someone had found it and just turned it off and kept it.

Went back to the room, emptied everything out. No phone. Emailed my husband at his meeting. He didn't have it.

Went downstairs to the fitness center again. The staff was having a meeting right in the middle of the hallway and the manager asked if anyone found a blackberry. Someone had. She found it in the fitness center and had put it in her office. I'm so happy it was found but why didn't she just turn it in to the front desk? It would have saved me a lot of anxiety.

I promise I'm going to get back to my healthy living tips. Or maybe this is one! When you travel, use the fitness center. Thirty minutes on the elliptical machine is a great workout. Just make sure your cell phone is in a pocket where it won't fall out!

Thanksgiving-Famine or Feast

Why does it have to be either one? Take the middle ground. Most of us tend to overeat during the holidays. Last year, I didn't have any problem with overeating. The heart attack was still fresh on my mind. I didn't even eat one of my Mother's fresh baked yeast biscuits because I know they are made with solid artery clogging shortening.

This is my tip for Thanksgiving. Enjoy the food. So much of eating is a mind game. Decide what you are gong to eat and how much ahead of time. Take small portions. Eat slowly and savour every bite. Make the smaller portions last a long time.

After the meal, talk someone into going with you on a walk if the weather is good. Even if it isn't so good, bundle up. Or get out the Wii and bowl. Plan this ahead of time and stick to your plan.

Remember so much of eating is a mind game.

Exercise

Exercise was one of the changes I made in my life. Lack of it was one thing I feel like contributed to the heart attack. Thisis also one of the hardest things for me to do consistently.

Cardiac rehab got me started back in the exercise habit. My goal is to exercise for 150 minutes per week. My main exercise is walking. I walk fast and almost run at times. Hiking is easy and fun for me but I have to talk my husband into going with me.

I'm not saying the exercise is easy. It isn't. It's easier to procrastinate. I still struggle on how to make it less of a requirement and more fun.

How To Eat a Delicious Baked Potato (without ingesting too many calories and fat)

So one of the best things to eat is a baked potato but what is a baked potato without butter, cheese and sour cream?

Here is how I now eat a baked potato-

Use fat free ranch dressing instead of sour cream or
Use plain fat free Greek yogurt instead of sour cream.
Use low fat cheese instead of regular. I read the package label and measure the cheese.
Use about a teaspoon of olive oil instead of butter.
Add pepper and/or one of your Mrs. Dash seasonings.
Another option is to use salsa.

I used fat free ranch dressing and low fat mozerella on mine. Try it! It's really good.

I'm just so bursting with ideas for this series on healthier living, it's hard to come up woth some sort of sensible order to present them.

Today I'm going to address sodium intake. I feel that cutting down on salt is extrememely important to healthier living. I'm not going to advise anyone on how much sodium should be eaten in a day. I'm just going to tell you how I lowered my salt intake.

Here are some tips I have come up with to lower sodium intake:
1. Read labels on foods. Processed foods have so much salt in them. I try to buy products that have lower sodium levels.
2. I make as many foods as I can from scratch and I do not add salt.
3. There are many canned vegetables that now come prepared with no salt. I drain many vegetables and wash them before cooking. Some vegetables obviously cannot be drained or rinsed (i.e. tomatoes and creamed corn) but green beans, kidney bean, black beans, etc. can.

4. Mrs. Dash, baby! I have a variety of flavors and use it like salt. As you can see, I have several bottles beside my stove.
5. Trader Joe's actually has many products with lower sodium.

I've been successful in cuting my sodium intake. I now find that foods that are heavily salted just do not appeal to me.

First Steps I Took To Healthier Living

One of the first things I did after the heart attack was change my eating habits. Your state of mind has to be that it is not a diet, it is a way of life.

Here are some of the things I changed immediately-
1. I quit eating biscuits. Bisquits are made with crisco and it is not good for your heart.
2. I do not eat bacon. Sometimes I use vegetarian bacon to flavor a recipe that calls for bacon. Have you noticed that restaurants put bacon on everything? Ask them to leave it off.
3. I drastically cut the amount of cheese I eat. If I make a recipe that calls for cheese, I use fat free cheese or low fat cheese and I carefully measure the amount I am using. Sometimes you just don't realize how much you are eating.
4. I eat an apple and a banana everyday.

This is a good starting point. Stay tuned!

Healthy Living

So about one year ago I had a heart attack. It was a big surprise. I guess everyone says that. I was only 60, about 20 pounds over weight. It changed my life.

You see, I have grandchildren and children that I would like to spend more time. Best of all I have the most wonderful husband in the world. I feel like God is not finished with me and that's why he gave me a second chance.

I'm going to do a series on changes I made to my life so it would be healthier. I think I can help other people who are not living a very healthy life become healthier and it is not really all that hard! Well, some of it is.

View from the top of the lighthouse

This summer has flown by. Spent some time with my sweet 10 year old granddaughter. Took her to the Outer Banks in North Carolina so she could see the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. You should have seen her face when we drove up and parked. We climbed the steps to the top and what a view! Because it was very windy, we were the next to the last group allowed to go to the top.

Spent some time getting to know my younger son's soon to be step children. They are precious and have made great friends with their new cousin.

Three cousins

Mountain Made in the Grove Arcade in downtown Asheville is now carrying my mountain quilted fabric postcard art quilts. Since they are selling very well, I have not had much time to add new products to my Etsy shop.

Floral Needlepoint Vintage Purse

Burgandy wine colored needlepoint purse has a floral design on both sides. The edge has a coordinating design. The colors in the design are light tan, dark tan, rose pink, red, light green and dark green. Edged in a burgandy piping.

The brass closure on the vintage needlepoint purse is a leaf design and has a chain handle. The interior is lined with a burgandy cotton fabric with a large side pocket.

The vintage needlepoint purse appears to have been lightly used. It is in very good condition. Not sure of the age but I think is from the 1960's. Maybe the 1970's.

Dimensions are 9" tall by 12" at the widest point. The antique brass handle is 9" wide. The bottom is 2" wide.

Block SOUTH-3 of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilt Project

Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Morganton, North Carolina is a gateway town to the mountains in the west and the economic centers in the east.

Natural beauty surrounds the area, providing a respite from city life and a great variety of outdoor recreational activities. Living and working in this idyllic place is Linda of SewUpScale, creator of Block SOUTH-3 of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilt Project.

Rated the #1 retirement community by Retirement Living magazine, and one of the top 10 places to raise a family by Readers Digest, Morganton has a mix of culture, leisure activities and quality of life that make it a favorite with young and old alike. The city's downtown is filled with clothing stores, restaurants and antique stores.

Pisgah National Forest's eastern borders are west of town. Morganton is half an hour west of Hickory, North Carolina, an hour east of Asheville, North Carolina and an hour and a half north of Charlotte, North Carolina. Morganton's location gives it a great advantage of accesibility, while remaining a bit off the beaten path. Here is a beautiful nature blog about hiking in the area.

Local wildlife includes bald eagles, falcons, hawks, deer, bears, and turkey. There are four challenging golf courses in the area. The nearby 6,500 acre man-made Lake James provides boating, camping, sailing, skiiing and fishing opportunities. The Catawba River is famous for trout fishing, rafting, tubing and canoeing pursuits. A 5-mile paved Greenway parallels the Catawba River where joggers, bikers, and walkers can enjoy the natural sites and wildlife. In season, cross country and downhill snow skiing are available less than an hour away in the upper Blue Ridge Mountain elevations near Boone.
The area also supports a strong arts culture, from musicians to painters, potters to scultors. Several arts galleries are located in downtown Morganton. The annual Tour d'Art fine arts show is held there showcasing visual, performing and culinary arts.

Linda has lived her whole life in and near the mountains of eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina. Linda has a special affinity for making things featuring mountain landscapes and outdoor scenes. Currently she concentrates on using a variety of fiber art techniques to make small landscapes within the genre known as fabric postcards.

Quiltsy Feature of Sewupscale

My block taken at the Catawba River Greenway Park in Morganton,NC

I'm so excited for SewUpscale to be featured on the Etsy Quiltsy Team Blog. The Quiltsy Team is making a traveling quilt. The quilt is made up of log cabin blocks that are going from city to city. Each quilter adds their block to the row. Sewupscale participated in the Southeast row. After the row is completed, it will be sent to a quilter to sew the rows together and then to someone to quilt the whole thing. After finishing, it will be offered for sell on the team shop.

We were all supposed to take a picture of our block somewhere in our community. I chose the Catawba River Greenway Park since it is so beautiful even in the winter.

Here is picture of the row after adding my block. As you can see, the quilt is made of blue, green and purple.

I recently posted a blog where I talked about drawing with scissors. Today I am going to talk about painting with thread. Do you know anyone who loves thread? They must be weird, huh? Ok, so I love thread. Some people are obsessed with buying jewelry or shoes or clothes but I am obsessed with buying thread (and fabric but that's a whole other article). My thread holders are full and have overflowed to a box. See--

Drawing With Scissors

I've never considered myself to be an artist. I can't really draw anything with a pencil or paint a picture. But put a pair of scissors in my hand and I can make fabric come to life. Then give me a sewing machine and it's like having a paint brush in my hand.

I make quilted fabric postcards that are either 4" by 6" or 5" by 7". Mostly I make landscapes but also enjoy any kind of nature theme. I can even create hstorical buildings too. It has become my passion. I also make landscape wall hangings but I'm not as obsessed with making them.

Selling my postcards on Etsy is a way to be able to make more. If you don't buy them, I can't make more. I've already given gifts to all my friends and relatives. What would I do with them? They would run me out of house and home!

From A Buyer's Perspective

Although I sell on Etsy at http://sewupscale.etsy.com (have to get a plug in for my shop!), I am also a buyer of handmade. If I can buy handmade, I will. Here are some things I look for in a shop (or don't look for) when I am shopping handmade.

1. I know you hear this over and over but pictures ARE important. To get me to buy, they don't have to look like the front page Etsy pictures but they do need to be clear. Also, in most cases, you need to use all 5 spaces. Take a picture of all angles. Take a picture of the front of the item and the back. I usually won't buy from someone that only has one picture. Makes me think they don't think enough of what they're selling to take the time to add these shots.

2. Give a good description. You may know what it looks like but I don't. Can't talk to you about SEO or any of those things but if I don't see a good description, I won't buy. Look at your product and just talk it out and write down what you are saying. What is it? Make sure you add the dimensions and specific colors.

3. How can your product be used? Who needs it? For example, I sell quilted fabric postcards. They can be sent to a friend as a greeting and when received, they can be framed. The perfect card and gift all in one.

4. Proofread. Make sure you have used correct grammar (or at least close), have no spelling errors, and no typing errors. This may not make a difference to some people but it may to others so cover yourself.

5. Your shop needs to look like it is in business. Maybe you haven't sold anything yet and have almost given up but if your shop is still open, it needs to look like you're still around to ship what I've bought. Keep adding products or renew occasionally. Also keep your shop announcement up to date. For example, it's now September and you still have a notice about a spring sale, I'm going to wonder if I'm going to receive my purchase.

These may be simple things. Attention to detail is crucial. And yes, I know, as an artist, this is the part that is so hard to do.

Five Important Things To Keep 'em Coming Back.

As a buyer and seller on Etsy, I have gained a great deal of knowledge and experience about buying and selling handmade. The following are some ideas on how to add a personal touch. This is the way I like to be treated when I purchase.

1. As soon as you get an order, respond either by an email or convo. I use convo if the cutomer has been on Etsy for awhile. If the customer is brand new, I use their email address. Example: "Thank you for your purchase. Your package will be mailed on Tuesday." This takes about 2 minutes and adds the personal touch.
2. Leave feedback for your customer. I do this after I have mailed the package. Example: "Great customer. Fast payment. Your purchase is in the mail."
3. In your package, add either a business card or a card with an artist biography. If the customer is giving their purchase as a gift to somone, the card can be included with their gift.
4. In the package you mail, add a card or note saying "Thank you for your purchase." You can recycle old greeting cards. These notes do not have to be fancy but make sure they are neat.
5. Some customers appreciate unique packaging. I decorate the envelopes I use to mail the quilted fabric postcards using stamps. Sometimes I wrap the postcards with tissue paper and tie with a little piece of ribbon. Use your imagination and reuse and recycle!

Remember that when customers buy handmade they usually want a more personal touch.

Garden of the Gods

I love Colorado Springs. And Garden of the Gods Park is amazing. The 480 acres were given to the City of Colorado Springs in 1909 by the children of Charles Perkins. The park, made up of sandstone formations, was to forever be free to the public and it is.

Can't wait to get some time to make postcards from my pictures. But for now, just enjoy these photos.

Table Rock, NC A Great Place To Hike

Table Rock, located in the Appalachian Mountains in Burke County, North Carolina, is a wonderful place to spend a day hiking, picnicking, or rock climbing. Located in the Pisgah National Forest and in the Linville Gorge area, the view from the top is spectacular. To get there, from Morganton, NC, drive north on Highway 181 and when you get to Gingercake Road, take a left. This will very quickly turn into a dirt/gravel road and you will travel 8 or 9 miles to the parking area. It gets very windy at the very top. The hike to the top is about one mile. To some, this hike might be a little challenging.

The picture on the left is a handmade 5" by 7" postcard I made. Two of the photographs are taken at the top and one is a view of Table Rock. The postcard can be purchased at http://sewupscale.etsy.com/. Makes a great gift.

A Drive in the Country in Minnesota and Wisconsin

About a month ago, my husband and I made a trip to Minneapolis. We drove out into the countryside and had a wonderful day. We drove from Minneapolis to Stillwater, Minnesota and then over the St Croix River and then headed north in Wisconsin. We crossed back over the St Croix River and then headed back south to Minneapolis. It was beautiful drive with beautiful countryside. Took many pictures and stopped at the little towns on the way. The quilted landscape fabric postcard art quilt on the left is from a picutre of the barn on the left. It is one of the many barns along this route.

Windmills

A few months ago, my husband and I took a trip to Dallas, Texas for a meeting he was attending. We went out a day early and paid a visit to Lawton, Oklanhoma where we lived many years ago. While visiting the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge we spotted a windmill farm. We followed the windmills until we got very close. I took pictures and then had to make a quilted fabric post card art quilt. We were very facinated by theses windmills since you just don't see these in western North Carolina. The picture on the right is the photograph and the picture on the left is the fabric post card art quilt I made.

Almost every year, my husband and I go to the coast. When the children were young, the whole family would go. Atlantic Beach, NC is one of the beaches we have gone to the most. Why? Well, my husband has a meeting in Atlantic Beach every June. There is something so soothing about the sounds of the waves. Walking through the woods is one of my favorite stress relievers. Along the Blue Ridge Parkway are numerous trails and paths. One of my favorites is the Linville Falls Trail and the Linville Groge Trail at Mile Post 316. You get a beautiful view the of Linville Falls and the Gorge area. The post card art quilt in the top right reminds me of that trail and any similar trails in the forest. The photo on the left is a picture of the falls from the upper trail. Bottom right is a picture of the trail.

Little Brown Church in Blowing Rock, NC

Is this worth seeing in person? I think so. Take a side trip to Blowing Rock, NC from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Located in the mountains of northwest North Carolina, there are retail shops, coffee shops and some quiant little churches. In the middle of the town is a park and in the summer months there is an art festival. This fabric post card art quilt was inspired by one of those churches.

Big Red Barn

Footbridge at Julian Price Park, NC

Julian Price Park on the Blue Ridge Parkway is located at Mile Post 297 near Blowing Rock, NC. There are miles of hiking trails, a picnic area and a campground just to name a few of the adtiviites. Adjacent to Julian Price Park is the Moses Cone Park where a Parkway Craft Center is located. The photograph on the right was taken near the parking area. The fabric post card art quilt is my interpretation of the photo on the right.

Barn by the River

This adventure took us to an area in western NC called Glendale Springs, NC in Ashe County. The purpose of the trip was to view the fresco by Ben Long at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church located on Highway 16. A fresco, in case you don't know, is a painting on wet plaster. While we were there, we ate at a wonderful place called the Blue Ridge Cafe and Bakery. Right next to the cafe is the Greenhouse Craft Shop. Both of these businesses are located in an old school building and right across from the church with the fresco. And no, as you can see, I did not try to recreate the fresco. The scene for the post card art quilt, however, is of a nearby river and barn. On the left is the photo and on the right is my interpretation of the scene. Lake in the Mountains

This postcard is my interpretation of a photograph I took while on a boat tour of Lake Lure, NC. This neat little community is hidden away in the mountains of western North Carolina. Located east of Asheville, NC at highway 9 and 64/74A, this community has much appeal. Located there is the Lake Lure Inn, a very historical inn oozing with ambience. Also located on the lake is the Lodge at Lake Lure where my husband and I have stayed. The folks there really know how to make each guest feel special. Hiking is a great draw to the area. There is so much to say about this area, I could go on and on. Lawton, Oklahoma area

My recent trip to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge near Lawton, Oklahoma led to my taking many pictures. (Aren't digital cameras wonderful?) On the drive to the Refuge, we saw some windmills in the distance so we turned down a road that led us closer to the windmills. We were very fascinated by this sight since there are no windmills like this in western NC. The Windmills card on the left is my interpretation of the picture on the right. Made a new quilted post card today. Haven't gotten it photographed yet so it is not listed yet at my etsy web site http://www.sewupscale.etsy.com but wanted to share this tip with any who sew. I used a knit top my granddaughter had outgrown. It had horses on it. Since it is a little difficult to sew knit fabric without it stretching, I used iron on interfacing to the back. Worked great. Very little stretching.

Haven't had time to do much creating lately. Trying to make plans for Christmas and working full time. I work as a social worker at the department of social services. It's so hard right now becausse the economy is so bad. So many people need help.
